In our interview with Bill Warner, founder and organiser of the Amelia Island Concours, he summed up what made motorsport special in the 1960s and 1970s: ‘On the one hand, it was a very dangerous time. Too many deaths and cars that were almost criminal in their construction. On the other hand, there was diversity of design with exciting technologies such as V12s, flat 12s, V8s, turbines, monocoques, tube frames, early composites and limited aerodynamics. Moreover, the cars had style and a purity of design.’

Warner likes to celebrate that same diversity with his concours, paying tribute to motorsport and its heroes. And he makes good on his promise: no other concours event offers such a varied field of cars in such a relaxed environment.

The heroes featured in our latest issue of AUTOMOBILSPORT include Lodovico Scarfiotti and Ivan Capelli. Scarfiotti was tragically killed 50 years ago at the Roßfeld hillclimb. We look back on his life and career from Page 68 onwards. As for Capelli, he shot to prominence after his Formula 3 success at Monaco in 1984. He then drove for Tyrrell at the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch in 1985, before heading back to Formula 3000 ahead of a return to F1 with Leyton House in 1987. Our author Ian Phillips, who back then was team manager at Leyton House, describes those first two Formula 1 seasons. For a small team, Leyton House was quite successful – particularly with a certain Adrian Newey responsible for the design of the ‘Miami blue’ cars. It’s an exciting insider story.
